The durability and wisdom of Scandinavia, coupled with world-wide experience, can be yours when you use MacPave to reinforce your asphalt roadway. Proven under the harsh, exacting climate and severity of adverse weather in Sweden, Finland and Norway, MacPave, when correctly installed, has extended the durability and wear-resistance of highways by years through virtually eliminating reflective cracking.
MacPave will help your roads, bridges and runways perform better and last longer - saving money and traffic delays.
MacPave will protect your roadways for periods of up to 10 years. It will help them endure extremes of temperature and rainfall. MacPave is the sworn enemy of reflective cracking. Defects in the road bed are prevented from reaching the surface and making the problem worse.
Easy to install - traffic can be allowed to continue during roadwork - economically attractive. MacPave has proven itself in many parts of the world, and now a "homegrown" version is available in the U.S. A summary of MacPave's advantages is given below. A limited list of MacPave's impressive specifications is also provided.
Reflective cracking in new asphalt overlays and over concrete block overlays of asphalt continues to be a worldwide problem for pavement design and maintenance engineers. This problems continues despite many attempts to solve it with a considerable variety of products and reconstruction techniques. Performance records show that MacPave, when covering the orginal pavement fault prior to applying the overlays, has consistenly proven to be the most economical and effective way to control refective and thermal cracking in asphalt overlays.
A common problem is that spalled joints in concrete roads often are saw cut and removed. The resulting trench is filled with hot mix asphalt or concrete to the level of existing surface, and the entire road is then overlaid. In one or two years after the overlays, two new cracks appear and reflect through the newly-laid asphalt layer. MacPave placed over the two new joints will significantly retard this reflective cracking. The best result is not to saw cut - just place a MacPave membrane over the joints - it`s more economical.
Vertical movement in the substrate expansion and contraction forces (whipping concrete blocks), stress, and vibrating in-service loads are conditions that have to be addressed when designing for reflective control. In order to successfully control and retard reflective cracking, the density, weight, speed, thickness, tensile strength and retention of thickness under load of the crack control product is essential to long-term performance.
Stress concentrations at pavement joints or cracks are a primary factor in deterioration, and potholes propagate the pavement fault (you get a pothole on the roads after you have reflective cracks if the water is intruding in the roadbeds and washing away the tack-coat and the overlays are separating from the the surface from before the pothole was created). When a joint is stressed, either vertically or horizontally, MacPave disperses loads and resulting stresses over its length and width. This load and stress dissipation reduces the crack propagation in the asphalt overlays. MacPave's outstanding ability to successfully retard and control reflective cracking in asphalt overlays has been thoroughly proven in day-to-day use on Roads, Highway, Airports, Parking Lots and Ports applications around the globe.
Given international recognition under ISO 9002, MacPave meets exacting specifications and exceeds those of other mastic overlays by means of its unique polyester reinforced structure.
