MacPave should be applied only to clean, dry concrete or asphalt surfaces. The receiving
surface can be cleaned by compressed air or by brushing. Particular care should be taken to remove any loose material such as stones or
concrete fragments prior to installation, this being specially important on airport runways and taxiways.
The recommended amount of tack-coat adhesive is 0.70 liters/m2
i.e. 0.15 gallons/yd2 on a smooth surface. On a milled surface, this can be increased to 0.90
liters/m2 or 19 gallons/yd2. Use of excess tack-coat could
result in bitumen bleeding during overlay installation.
In the U.S., the specified tack-coat is AC-20, while in Europe, Type B85 or equivalent is preferred.
The use of asphalt emulsion is not recommended. The ambient temperature and that of the ground should be carefully noted and the tack-coat
temperature adjusted accordingly. All edges of the overlay membrane must be firmly bonded to the old pavement, especially those facing the
oncoming traffic. A small hand roller can be effective here, although a vibrating roller is not recommended. The new, small rubber tire pneumatic
roller, delivering about 1 ton of pressure, is ideal.
To get a strong bond with the surface, the tack-coat should extend at least 50 mm (2 inches) each side
of the membrane. A slight amount of disbonding is acceptable since the membrane will adjust later due to the heat from the hotmix, both to the
crack/joint and the old surface.
MacPavemembrane should be installed 24-48 hours prior to paving operations. MacPave is
strong enough to withstand weeks of heavy traffic, although in such cases, a careful inspection should be made before paving.
MacPave must extend at least 150 mm (6 inches) on either side of the joint, crack or distressed area.
The thickness of the final asphalt overlay must be at least 40 mm. (approximately 100 kg/m2), i.e. 1-1/2
inches (approximately 200 lbs/yd2).
Guidelines for use of various widths of MacPave
20" (50 cm) wide material
To be applied over both asphalt and concrete surfaces: typically, transverse joints and cracks, random cracks, slightly spalled surfaces and
longitudinal paver joints that exhibit double cracking.
42" (102 cm) wide material
To be applied over the following asphalt and concrete surfaces:
- Previously repaired areas, such as saw-cut removal-repair joints
- Severely spalled deteriorated areas
- Bridge decks, bridge joints, upper parking decks (parking garages)
55" (140 cm) wide material
To be applied over the following asphalt and concrete surfaces:
- Around manholes - there are precut versions, both rounds and squares
- Larger areas with alligator cracking.
- Bridge decks and parking decks.
When conditions warrant further consideration of material width, material shall extend 4-5 inches (10-
15 cm) beyond the area to be repaired. Additional questions regarding width of material should be directed to us, the manufacturer, or to our
representatives. Other widths can be manufactured in special cases.
